Whether you are driving to the next city, flying for Umrah, or saying goodbye to a loved one at the airport, safe travel blessings and dua turn an ordinary trip into an act of worship. The Prophet ๏ทบ did not leave travel to chance. He taught a specific dua for leaving home, for boarding, for climbing and descending, for stopping at a place, and for coming back.
If you want safe travel blessings and dua copy paste, you are in the right place. Pick any message below, copy it and paste it straight into a text, a card or a social post.
He also taught what to say to someone who is leaving. That second part is what most guides skip. This guide to safe travel blessings and dua covers both, with Arabic, transliteration, meaning and the hadith source for every dua, so you can recite with confidence.
Quick answer: the main dua for safe travel
The core dua for safe travel, from Sahih Muslim 1342, is recited once you are seated in your car, plane, train or bus:
Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. Glory be to the One who has placed this at our service, for we could never have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we will surely return.
Say Allahu Akbar three times before it. For someone else who is travelling, say: Astawdi’ullaha dinaka wa amanataka wa khawatima ‘amalik (I entrust to Allah your religion, your trust and your final deeds).

Why travel dua matters in Islam
A traveller’s dua is one of the three duas the Prophet ๏ทบ said are answered without doubt. The other two are the dua of the oppressed and the dua of a parent for (or against) their child (Abu Dawud 1536, Tirmidhi 1905, graded hasan).
So a journey is not just a risk to manage. It is a window of accepted prayer. Travel dua also builds tawakkul: you take every practical precaution, then hand the outcome to Allah. That is why safe travel blessings and dua belong in every trip plan, next to your tickets and bookings.
The travel dua itself comes from the Quran. Allah says believers mount their ships and animals and then glorify Him with these words (Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14). The Prophet ๏ทบ applied the verse to every journey.

Dua for safe travel, step by step
1. Dua when leaving home
Say this as you step out of your door. The Prophet ๏ทบ said whoever says it is told: you are guided, you are sufficed, you are protected, and the devil turns away from him.
In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah.
Source: Abu Dawud 5095, Tirmidhi 3426 (sahih).
2. Dua when you sit in your car, bus or plane
Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) described exactly what the Prophet ๏ทบ did when he mounted his ride. This is the ideal sequence for the moment you sit down and fasten your seatbelt.
- Say Bismillah as you get in.
- Once seated, say Alhamdulillah.
- Then recite:
Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
Glory be to the One who has placed this at our service, for we could never have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we will surely return.
- Say Alhamdulillah three times, then Allahu Akbar three times.
- Finish with:
Subhanaka inni zalamtu nafsi faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant.
Glory be to You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.
Source: Abu Dawud 2602, Tirmidhi 3446 (sahih). After saying it, the Prophet ๏ทบ smiled and said Allah is pleased when His servant asks for forgiveness, knowing that only He forgives.
3. The full dua for a safe journey (Safar ki dua)
This is the complete travel dua narrated by Ibn Umar (RA). Recite it at the start of any real journey: a road trip, a flight, or Umrah.
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha watwi ‘anna bu’dah. Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is-safar, wa ka’abatil-manzar, wa su’il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl.
Allah is the Greatest (three times). Glory be to the One who has placed this at our service, for we could never have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we will surely return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey for goodness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are our Companion on the journey and the Guardian of our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from distressing sights, and from an evil outcome in my wealth and family on my return.
Source: Sahih Muslim 1342.
Notice what this dua asks for. It is not only “keep me safe”. It asks for birr and taqwa on the trip, and for Allah to guard the family you leave behind. That is the real meaning of a blessed journey.
4. Dhikr when going up and coming down
Jabir (RA) said: when we went up we said Allahu Akbar, and when we came down we said Subhanallah (Sahih Bukhari 2993).
Today this fits a plane taking off and landing, a car climbing a mountain road, or even a lift. It is short, easy for children, and keeps the heart busy with Allah instead of fear.
5. Dua when stopping at a hotel or rest place
Whenever you check into a hotel, stop at a service station, or set up a tent, say:
ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจูููููู ูุงุชู ุงูููู ุงูุชููุงู ููุงุชู ู ููู ุดูุฑูู ู ูุง ุฎููููู
A’udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said nothing will harm the person until they leave that place (Sahih Muslim 2708).
6. Dua before dawn while travelling
If you are on the road at sahar (the last part of the night), the Prophet ๏ทบ used to say:
ุณูู ูุนู ุณูุงู ูุนู ุจูุญูู ูุฏู ุงูููู ููุญูุณููู ุจูููุงุฆููู ุนูููููููุงุ ุฑูุจููููุง ุตูุงุญูุจูููุง ููุฃูููุถููู ุนูููููููุงุ ุนูุงุฆูุฐูุง ุจูุงูููู ู ููู ุงููููุงุฑู
Sami’a sami’un bi hamdillahi wa husni bala’ihi ‘alayna. Rabbana sahibna wa afdil ‘alayna, ‘a’idhan billahi minan-nar.
One who hears has heard us praise Allah for His favours and the good trials He gives us. Our Lord, be our Companion and be gracious to us. I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire.
Source: Sahih Muslim 2718.
7. Dua when entering a new town or city
When the Prophet ๏ทบ saw a town he intended to enter, he would say:
Allahumma Rabbas-samawatis-sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa Rabbal-aradinas-sab’i wa ma aqlalna, wa Rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa Rabbar-riyahi wa ma dharayna. As’aluka khayra hadhihil-qaryati wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a’udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha.
O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they shade, Lord of the seven earths and all they carry, Lord of the devils and all they misguide, Lord of the winds and all they scatter: I ask You for the good of this town, the good of its people and the good of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its people and the evil of what is in it.
Source: Al-Hakim and An-Nasa’i in al-Sunan al-Kubra. Al-Hakim graded it authentic and Ibn Hajar graded it hasan; a few scholars considered the chain weak.
8. Dua when returning home
On the way back, recite the full travel dua (No. 3) and add:
ุขููุจููููุ ุชูุงุฆูุจููููุ ุนูุงุจูุฏููููุ ููุฑูุจููููุง ุญูุงู ูุฏูููู
Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li Rabbina hamidun.
We return, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.
Source: Sahih Muslim 1342. The Sunnah on arrival is to pray two rak’ahs in the masjid before going home, as the Prophet ๏ทบ did (Sahih Bukhari 443, Sahih Muslim 716).
9. Travelling by boat or ship
Many Muslims recite the words of Prophet Nuh (AS) when boarding a boat or ferry:
ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููู ู ูุฌูุฑูุงููุง ููู ูุฑูุณูุงููุง ุฅูููู ุฑูุจููู ููุบููููุฑู ุฑูุญููู ู
Bismillahi majreha wa mursaha, inna Rabbi laghafurur-rahim.
In the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. My Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
Source: Surah Hud 11:41. It is a Quranic verse and good to recite, but the Prophetic travel dua (No. 3) remains the main dua for any vehicle, including boats.
Safe travel blessings for someone who is travelling
The Sunnah gives a complete farewell exchange: what you say to the traveller, and what the traveller says back. These are the most authentic safe travel blessings you can give anyone, far better than a generic “have a safe trip”. If you are looking for a safe journey dua for someone you love, start here.
10. What to say when saying goodbye to a traveller
The Prophet ๏ทบ would take the traveller’s hand and say:
ุฃูุณูุชูููุฏูุนู ุงูููู ุฏููููููุ ููุฃูู ูุงููุชูููุ ููุฎูููุงุชููู ู ุนูู ููููู
Astawdi’ullaha dinaka, wa amanataka, wa khawatima ‘amalik.
I entrust to Allah your religion, your trust, and the final outcome of your deeds.
Source: Tirmidhi 3443, Abu Dawud 2600 (sahih). For a woman, say dinaki, wa amanataki, wa khawatima ‘amaliki.
11. A blessing of taqwa, forgiveness and ease
A man told the Prophet ๏ทบ he was about to travel and asked for provisions. The Prophet ๏ทบ replied:
Zawwadakallahut-taqwa, wa ghafara dhanbak, wa yassara lakal-khayra haythuma kunt.
May Allah give you taqwa as your provision, forgive your sins, and make good easy for you wherever you are.
Source: Tirmidhi 3444 (hasan).
12. Asking Allah to shorten the road for them
Another man asked for advice before a journey. The Prophet ๏ทบ told him to keep taqwa and say Allahu Akbar on every high place. As the man walked away, the Prophet ๏ทบ prayed for him:
ุงููููููู ูู ุงุทููู ูููู ุงููุฃูุฑูุถูุ ููููููููู ุนููููููู ุงูุณููููุฑู
Allahummatwi lahul-arda, wa hawwin ‘alayhis-safar.
O Allah, fold up the earth for him and make the journey easy for him.
Source: Tirmidhi 3445 (hasan). This is the perfect dua to make quietly for a parent, spouse or child as their flight takes off.
13. What the traveller says back
The traveller replies to those staying behind with:
ุฃูุณูุชูููุฏูุนูููู ู ุงูููู ุงูููุฐูู ููุง ุชูุถููุนู ููุฏูุงุฆูุนููู
Astawdi’ukumullahal-ladhi la tadi’u wada’i’uh.
I leave you in the care of Allah, whose trusts are never lost.
Source: Ibn Majah 2825 (graded hasan by al-Albani). It is a beautiful comfort for family who worry while you are away.

Sunnah etiquette of travel
Dua works best alongside the Prophet’s ๏ทบ practical travel habits. These are short, practical and backed by hadith. Pair them with the safe travel blessings and dua above for a journey that follows the Sunnah from start to finish.
| Sunnah practice | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pray Istikhara before a big trip | Ask Allah to choose what is best for you | Sahih Bukhari 1162 |
| Leave early in the morning | The Prophet ๏ทบ prayed for barakah in the early hours of his ummah | Abu Dawud 2606, Tirmidhi 1212 |
| Prefer Thursday for departure | The Prophet ๏ทบ liked to set out on Thursdays | Sahih Bukhari 2950 |
| Do not travel alone at night | He warned that no rider would travel alone at night if people knew its dangers | Sahih Bukhari 2998 |
| Appoint a leader in a group of three or more | Keeps decisions calm and avoids arguments | Abu Dawud 2608 |
| Shorten four-rak’ah prayers (qasr) | A gift of ease from Allah to travellers | Surah An-Nisa 4:101 |
| Return quickly once your work is done | Travel is “a piece of hardship”, so hurry back to family | Sahih Bukhari 1804 |
| Tell family before arriving at night | He disliked a traveller surprising his family late at night | Sahih Bukhari 5244 |
The exact distance for qasr and the rules for combining prayers differ between madhabs. Ask a scholar you trust for your school of thought.
Common mistakes and myths about safe travel dua
Most of these come from good intentions, but they drift away from the Sunnah. Fixing them makes your travel dua stronger, not weaker.
- Treating dua as a replacement for precautions. The Prophet ๏ทบ told a man to tie his camel and then trust Allah (Tirmidhi 2517). Wear your seatbelt, rest when tired, then say your dua.
- Believing some days or months are unlucky for travel. Many people avoid travelling in the month of Safar or turn back because of a “bad sign”. The Prophet ๏ทบ rejected bad omens and the superstition about Safar (Sahih Bukhari 5757).
- Quoting made-up duas as Sunnah. Some websites list duas with no source. You may make any dua in your own words, but only call it Sunnah when it has a reference.
- Relying on a sticker instead of saying the dua. A dua card on the dashboard is a helpful reminder. The Sunnah is to say the words yourself.
- Rushing the Arabic without meaning. Read the translation above once. Knowing that you are asking Allah to guard your family changes how you say it.
FAQs about safe travel blessings and dua
What is the best dua for safe travel?
The best dua is the full travel dua from Sahih Muslim 1342, which begins with Allahu Akbar three times and then Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha. It asks Allah for safety, ease, piety on the journey and protection for your family. Add the leaving-home dua (Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah) as you step out.
What dua do you say to someone who is travelling?
Say Astawdi’ullaha dinaka wa amanataka wa khawatima ‘amalik: I entrust to Allah your religion, your trust and your final deeds (Tirmidhi 3443). You can add Zawwadakallahut-taqwa and, as they leave, Allahummatwi lahul-arda wa hawwin ‘alayhis-safar. The traveller replies Astawdi’ukumullahal-ladhi la tadi’u wada’i’uh. It is the most authentic safe journey dua for someone who is leaving.
Is there a special dua for travelling by plane?
There is no separate Prophetic dua for planes, because planes did not exist. Scholars apply the general travel dua to every vehicle, as it thanks Allah for placing transport at our service. Say Allahu Akbar as the plane climbs and Subhanallah as it descends, following Sahih Bukhari 2993.
Should I read the travel dua every time I get in the car?
The full dua in Sahih Muslim is for setting out on a journey. For daily short drives, many scholars recommend at least Bismillah and Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha…, since the verse and Ali’s hadith refer to mounting any ride. Reading more is never harmful.
Can I make travel dua in English or Urdu?
Yes. You can make dua to Allah in any language, and He understands every heart. The Sunnah wording carries extra reward and precision, so try to learn the Arabic gradually. Until then, read the transliteration and meaning, and add your own personal dua in your language.
Is the dua of a traveller really accepted?
Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ named the traveller’s dua among three duas answered without doubt (Abu Dawud 1536, Tirmidhi 1905). Use the journey to pray for your parents, your children, your health and your akhirah, not only for a safe arrival.
What do you say when you return from a journey?
Recite the full travel dua and add Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li Rabbina hamidun (Sahih Muslim 1342). Then, if possible, pray two rak’ahs in the masjid before going home, as the Prophet ๏ทบ did.
What is the dua for safe travel for a loved one?
Say “Astawdi’ullaha deenaka wa amanataka wa khawatima ‘amalik” (I entrust to Allah your religion, your trust and the end of your deeds), reported in Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi, and add a personal prayer for their safe return.
Conclusion: make safe travel blessings and dua a habit
Safe travel blessings and dua are simple to practise: Bismillah at the door, Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha in your seat, takbir on the climb, refuge at every stop, and Ayibuna on the way home. For the people you love, Astawdi’ullaha dinaka is the most complete goodbye there is.
Pick one dua for safe travel from this guide and use it on your very next trip. Add another each time until the whole Sunnah of travel is second nature.
