What Does Islam Say About a Newborn Baby?

Every tradition of newborn baby blessings and dua starts from one belief: in Islam, a child is a gift (hibah) from Allah and a trust (amanah) for the parents. Allah says He gives daughters to whom He wills and sons to whom He wills (Surah Ash-Shura 42:49). So the first response to a birth is gratitude, not a preference for one gender.

When it comes to newborn baby blessings and dua, the Prophet ﷺ taught that every child is born on the fitrah, a natural inclination toward faith (Sahih al-Bukhari 1385). That is why the Sunnah surrounds a baby with Allah’s name from the first minutes: the adhan, tahnik, and dua.

Because of this, newborn baby blessings and dua are part of Muslim family life. Scholars also agree it is mustahab (recommended) to congratulate the parents and pray for the child. No single fixed wording is required, so any sincere, good dua is acceptable.

The Most Famous Congratulation Dua for a Newborn (and Its Reply)

Among all newborn baby blessings and dua, this is the one to learn first. Say this to the parents when you hear the news or visit the baby. It asks for blessing in the gift, gratitude to the Giver, and that the child grows up dutiful.

Dua 1: Barakallahu laka fil mawhub

  • Transliteration: Barakallahu laka fil-mawhubi laka, wa shakartal-wahiba, wa balagha ashuddahu, wa ruziqta birrahu.
  • English: May Allah bless you in what He has gifted you. May you thank the Giver, may the child reach full strength, and may you be granted his kindness.
  • Source: Hisnul Muslim (chapter on congratulating a birth); Imam an-Nawawi’s al-Adhkar.

Authenticity note: many websites call this a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. It is actually reported from the scholar Hasan al-Basri, and its chain has been graded weak (IslamQA 205068). The meaning is excellent and scholars still recommend saying it — just don’t attribute it to the Prophet ﷺ.

Boy or girl? In this dua, birrahu refers to the child. For a girl, say wa balaghat ashuddaha, wa ruziqta birraha. To address the mother, change laka to laki; for both parents, use lakuma.

Mistakes to Avoid When Congratulating

When you share newborn baby blessings and dua, keep them sincere. A few common habits go against the spirit of the Sunnah. Avoiding them makes your blessing more meaningful.

  • Showing less joy for a girl. The Quran condemns grief at the news of a daughter (Surah An-Nahl 16:58–59). Congratulate equally.
  • Praising without Masha’Allah. Always add Masha’Allah or Allahumma barik when you admire the baby.
  • Attributing the congratulation dua to the Prophet ﷺ. Say it, but know it comes from Hasan al-Basri.
  • Visiting too early or too long. The mother needs rest; send your dua by message if a visit isn’t welcome yet.
  • Asking “boy or girl?” with a tone. Every child is a gift; let your words show that.

At bedtime, you can also recite a good night dua for children before your baby sleeps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dua do you say when a baby is born?

When a baby is born, the father or a pious relative recites the adhan softly in the baby’s right ear, then does tahnik with a date and prays for barakah. Parents can recite the Prophet’s protection dua, U’idhuka bi kalimatillahit-tammah, and the Quranic dua Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a’yun. Visitors congratulate with Barakallahu laka fil mawhub.

What do you say to congratulate a Muslim on a new baby?

The best-known phrase is Barakallahu laka fil mawhubi lak, wa shakartal-wahib, wa balagha ashuddah, wa ruziqta birrah. It prays that the gift is blessed, the parents are grateful, and the child grows up kind to them. Shorter options are “Mabrook”, “Masha’Allah” or “Barakallahu lakum”. Any sincere dua is acceptable, since no single wording is fixed.

How do new parents reply to congratulations?

Parents reply with Barakallahu laka wa baraka ‘alayk, wa jazakallahu khayran, wa razaqakallahu mithlah, wa ajzala thawabak. It means: may Allah bless you, reward you, grant you the same blessing, and increase your reward. A simple “Jazakallahu khayran” or “Ameen, wa iyyakum” is also fine for WhatsApp replies.

Is “Barakallahu laka fil mawhub” a hadith?

No. It is found in Hisnul Muslim and Imam an-Nawawi’s al-Adhkar, but it is reported from Hasan al-Basri, not the Prophet ﷺ, and its chain is graded weak. Scholars still recommend saying it because its meaning is good and congratulating parents is mustahab. Just avoid calling it a Prophetic hadith.

Is there a different dua for a baby boy and a baby girl?

The duas are the same; only the Arabic pronoun changes. Use -hu (him) for a boy and -ha (her) for a girl — for example, u’idhuka becomes u’idhuki. The dua of Maryam’s mother (Surah Al-Imran 3:36) is especially fitting for a daughter.

When should I recite the protection dua for my baby?

Recite it right after birth and then daily — most families do it at bedtime and in the morning with other adhkar. Place your hand gently on the baby and say U’idhuka bi kalimatillahit-tammah…. It takes under ten seconds and follows the practice of the Prophet ﷺ with Hasan and Husain.

What do you say to congratulate a Muslim on a new baby?

Say “Mubarak!” and the dua “Barakallahu laka fil mawhubi lak” (May Allah bless you in what He has given you). To both parents you can say “Barakallahu feekuma.”
